Google Cloud’s annual Next event is happening in San Francisco next week (and we’ll be on the ground to cover all of the announcements), but ahead of the event, Google Cloud today put a spotlight on its partner ecosystem. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), 2023 – which was passed in the Rajya Sabha – has now become a law. It received presidential assent However, it appears that the law is impeded by several fundamental flaws, which are likely to prevent it from fulfilling the purported objectives that were sought to be achieved when it was being drafted as a data protection and privacy law. More importantly, the law may ultimately be seen as a tool through which the government will be able to circumvent the already scant mechanisms that are available to individuals with regard to their…

Researchers at Harvard University have used Google LLC’s public cloud infrastructure platform to create a clone of a supercomputer that was used to perform a heart disease study. They claim it’s a highly original use of cloud computing resources that can help other researchers who are struggling to access powerful supercomputers to complete their studies. Harvard professor Petros Koumoutsakos told Reuters that the study was intended to simulate a new therapy that’s designed to dissolve blood clots and tumor cells in the human circulatory system. His team required enormous amounts of computing power that are typically only available with supercomputers. According to…

SQL often struggles when it comes to managing massive amounts of time series data, but it’s not because of the language itself. The main culprit is the architecture that SQL typically works in, namely relational databases, which quickly become inefficient because they’re not designed for analytical queries of large volumes of time series data. Traditionally, SQL is used with relational database management systems (RDBMS) that are inherently transactional. They are structured around the concept of maintaining and updating records based on a rigid, predefined schema. For a long time, the most widespread type of database was relational, with SQL as its inseparable companion,…

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has reported tiny revenue growth, but a 106 percent surge in earnings for its cloud services, despite a marked slowdown in demand. The two outcomes are linked: CEO Daniel Zhang told investors who tuned into a Q2 earnings call “The growth rate was negatively impacted by the normalization of CDN demand as usage of video streaming, remote working, and remote learning came down when offline activities resumed after pandemic measures were lifted.” But less traffic meant lower costs. Zhang said Alibaba’s Teams-like collaboration tool DingTalk – which is part of Alibaba Cloud – reported “reduced co-location…
