Kasten by Veeam Update Addresses Kubernetes Skills Gap

The company this week announced Kasten by Veeam K10 V5.5, a cloud-native data management platform for Day 2 operations that provides enterprise DevOps teams with a scalable and secure system for backup/restore, disaster recovery and application mobility for Kubernetes applications (moving apps between clouds and on-premises for load balancing and upgrades).

According to the company, it can serve to mitigate the devastating talent shortage that especially affects cloud computing, about which Virtualization & Cloud Review has reported again and again and again and ….

“Kubernetes applications are growing at a rapid pace,” Veeam said in an Oct. 25 news release. “However, operations teams with the required skill sets to meet these demands are not able to keep up, which has made scaling simplicity of operations imperative. Purpose-built for Kubernetes, the latest release of Kasten by Veeam K10 V5.5 bridges this skills gap by introducing powerful new capabilities around Autonomous Operations and Cloud Native Expansion. As a complement to the suite of modern data protection and recovery solutions offered by Veeam to protect all data assets across virtual, cloud-native, SaaS, Kubernetes and physical workloads, these advancements will address the challenges historically found in Kubernetes around operational complexity at scale, especially due to the diversity of deployment environments.”

Among those Autonomous Operations are Intelligent Policies, which help organizations make intelligent decisions that simplify data protection at scale. The company in a blog post said the benefits of these Intelligent Policies span across multiple teams in an enterprise, including:

Development: Developers can continue to focus on app development while influencing and enabling backup policies with capabilities such as declarative policies.
Operations: Platform Ops teams can optimize resources and automate data protections tasks across distributed Kubernetes clusters with backup windows and job staggering.
Compliance: In the current environment of cybercrime such as ransomware, enterprise compliance and security teams gain visibility and peace of mind on data protection and coverage.
Cloud Native Expansion, meanwhile, addresses community capabilities and challenges that are increasing in scope and impact as Kubernetes becomes mainstream. Veeam said the cloud-native expansion vectors include increasing workload types, geographic regions, storage types and security.

“As Kubernetes applications grow in number and scale in diverse deployment environments, organizations face a shortage of skilled personnel — whether it be DevOps or Platform Ops to ensure that critical data management functions like Backup, Disaster Recovery (DR), and Application Mobility are in place,” Veeam said. “In other words, organizations need to not only transition to a new, modern cloud native development technology and workflow, but they require operations at scale without having an army of Certified Kubernetes Administrators. This is where Kasten K10 shines by scaling simplicity.”
